The Capital Market Team and our Community Partners have a lot of great events and activities planned this Fall! Be on the lookout for more details about the Following Activities:
June 19th - Creative Suitland Presents 2022 Juneteenth Festival
Creative Suitland presents 2022 Juneteenth Festival
The 2022 Juneteenth Festival will commemorate the end of slavery in the United States. We are also celebrating the HB 227 bill which establishes Juneteenth National Independence Day as a State legal holiday and State employee holiday. We are excited to gather the community drum circle, farmers’ market, poetry performances, genealogy resources, and family-friendly activities.
Are you interested in participating in the drum circle? This activity is open for all to join and starts at 3pm! Feel free to bring drums, bells, shakers, tambourines or your dancing shoes. Drum Circle will be led by Docta Yew of Ni Dembaya African Dance & Drum Ensemble. Instruments will not be provided.
Juneteenth is a 157-year-old commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. We observe it on June 19th to memorialize the day in 1865 when, in Galveston, Texas, many enslaved Black folks were informed of the end of the Civil War and the abolition of slavery. This official enforcement actually came late, as it had been well over two years since the signing of Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. While Juneteenth marks a significant day in Black history and a day of remembrance, it is also an opportunity to honour and celebrate Black history, heritage and culture.
Presented by Creative Suitland Arts Center.

Come learn more about foraging, and take a walk led by The Capital Market team member, ruth to learn how to identify plants that may be growing in your yard that could be useful in the kitchen.
